Institutional capacity building
Yes it’s back to school for the teachers. With Education for Sustainable Development such a new and important ‘subject’ and with it requiring diversity in understanding and application according to needs and situations, there is an awful lot of learning to do. In order to achieve sound Education for Sustainable Development practices we urgently need specialists in each and every school supported by an able staff and management team dedicated to learning about sustainability.
Most institutions will be starting from scratch or building on existing practices in (say) Environmental Education. Whether a primary school on the ‘pampa’ in the high Andes, a high tech secondary school in Bristol or a university in Lima, the same challenges apply in development, skills acquisition, implementation and most importantly the resourcing of activities to each and every one.
